The IBM AS/400 Model 9406-F45 midrange computer system

Description

The IBM AS/400 9406-F45 is a single rack midrange computer released by IBM in 1993. The AS/400 was designed to replace both the earlier System/38 and System/36 lines of computers with one unified line, and has evolved into the current “System i” series. This system is an iteration of the CISC-based CPU, with later machines migrating to a RISC POWER-based processor.

The user interface for the system is using a “5250” terminal, which is a special serial interface connected over a twin-ax cable, which can daisy-chain both terminals and printers. This is compared to RS-232 serial terminals on other systems, or “3270” type terminals on the IBM mainframe systems which do not daisy-chain and require a dedicated controller.
